VRChat is a VR social platform where users can join virtual spaces that can be personalized with custom-built spaces, avatars, events, hangouts, etc. It is available on SteamVR and Meta Quest headsets with support for non-VR modes as well. Creators can also build virtual worlds that can be uploaded via the VRChat SDK and sold on the platform’s marketplace to other platform users. In November 2023, the company launched ‘Paid Subscriptions’ in beta, which allows VRChat players to purchase in-game credits with fiat currency that can subsequently be spent to purchase subscriber-only content. The company will keep 20% of revenue generated via these subscriptions. Following this, VRChat added hand-tracking support in beta for its PC version (July 2024).
In June 2024, VRChat laid off ~30% of its staff due to slower-than-expected growth in the VR market and the company's over-hiring in 2021. Despite this, the company noted that it was in a sound financial position and would focus on capital efficiency given a dampened fundraising environment.
