Reviver

Reviver offers digital license plates for connected vehicles and claims to be the world's first digital license plate. The company’s digital license plate–dubbed “RPlate”–is offered on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) basis and started from USD 24.95 per month as of February 2024. It offers in-app registration and renewal, visual personalization capabilities, safety, and telematics providing alerts if the vehicle moves and gives the option to report it stolen via the app. The plate has its own security measures; it does not retain any user data, and transmissions between the plate and the cloud are also fully encrypted. Reviver’s other product offering–dubbed “RFleet”–combines RPlate with a dashboard to manage, track, and optimize fleets. However, a team of researchers pointed out a security-related vulnerability in the system in January 2023, which was resolved soon after.

Key customers and partnerships

As of March 2023, RPlates were available for purchase and were open for registration at the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) in California, Michigan, Arizona (for both consumer and commercial offerings), and Texas (for commercial product only), with plans to expand availability nationwide. The company first introduced the prototype version of the license plate in 2015 and had approximately 10,000 pilot users in California by October 2022 (California legalized the use of plates statewide in October 2022 following the pilot program started in 2018).

The company partnered with Ford in September 2023, to offer RPlate as an aftermarket offering via Ford’s dealerships in Arizona, California, and Michigan. It also partnered with the police departments of Atwater and Fort Bragg in California in December 2023, to deploy license plates within their vehicle fleets.
