Superbrewed Food (formerly White Dog Labs) is a nutrition and health company focused on developing alternative protein ingredients to be used in the production of food and beverages. The company created a naturally-brewed microbial protein (Superbrewed Protein) via an anaerobic fermentation process. According to the company, the production of this ingredient involves minimal processing, hence the resultant protein contains a higher nutritional profile and offers better functional benefits compared to other plant or microbial proteins. In May 2022, the postbiotic cultured protein received self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status from the FDA and was to be ready for distribution by 1H 2023.
In January 2024, the company gained patent approval for its postbiotic protein ingredient, granting the company broad rights for the creation, usage, and commercialization of bacterial biomass ingredients for the next 18 years.
Key customers and partnerships
In July 2022, the company entered into a strategic partnership with global cheese industry giant Bel Group to develop a new range of cheeses (both plant-based and dairy) using the Superbrewed Protein. The company expected to supply its protein for the production of animal-free milk, creamers, yogurt, ice creams, nutritional beverages, snacks, and baked goods.
In February 2024, the company partnered with global natural ingredients producer Döhler GmbH. Through this partnership, Döhler was to provide its fermentation capacity to produce Superbrewed Protein. Further, in August 2024, it formed a strategic alliance with Fonterra to explore Superbrewed's biomass protein platform applications.
