Lightyear acquires Next Level Electronics’ drivetrain technology

M&A

  • Lightyear, a Netherlands-based solar EV pioneer, acquired the technological design for drivetrain inverters from Next Level Electronics, a Dutch electronics development company specializing in the design of high-efficiency power electronics. This follows the two companies working together to develop drivetrain inverters.

  • With this acquisition, Lightyear will continue to develop a more efficient drivetrain platform for its solar EVs. The company’s custom-designed drivetrain is a key element to achieve lower energy consumption and therefore higher range and will be incorporated into their upcoming EV Lightyear 2, following further development.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Lightyear recently raised USD 81 million in funds in September in preparation for the production of Lightyear’s first vehicle, Lightyear 0 in late 2022 and to also ensure the continued achievement of development milestones for the company’s second model Lightyear 2. Additionally, the company partnered with Valmet Automotive , a holistic vehicle manufacturer, to manufacture Lightyear 0 and entered into a technical partnership with Koenigsegg , a Swedish high-performance sports car manufacturer, to jointly develop innovative EV technologies.
