Desktop Metal receives major contract from the US Department of Veterans Affairs

Partnerships

  • Desktop Metal, a seller of 3D printers and related products, announced that it has received a three-year contract from the US Department of Veterans Affairs to test and manufacture seat cushions, mattresses, and patient positioning devices and a variety of healthcare products using FreeFoam, a resin developed by Desktop Metal.

  • FreeFoam is a 3D-printed resin containing heat-activated foaming agents that allows the material to expand two to seven times its original size as programmed, allowing compact shipping of parts that can be expanded on demand.

  • The material is expected to be commercially available in 2023.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Desktop Metal continues to expand its product line-up targeting various industries. Earlier this month, the company also received FDA clearance for a resin that targets other types of healthcare applications like orthodontic and dental. On a separate note, in August this year, Desktop Metal upgraded its Shop System for improved functionality and introduced a new printer platform based on patent-pending Digital Sheet Forming (DSF) technology.
