Desktop Metal, a seller of 3D printers and related products, announced that it has received a three-year contract from the US Department of Veterans Affairs to test and manufacture seat cushions, mattresses, and patient positioning devices and a variety of healthcare products using FreeFoam, a resin developed by Desktop Metal.
FreeFoam is a 3D-printed resin containing heat-activated foaming agents that allows the material to expand two to seven times its original size as programmed, allowing compact shipping of parts that can be expanded on demand.
The material is expected to be commercially available in 2023.
Analyst QuickTake: Desktop Metal continues to expand its product line-up targeting various industries. Earlier this month, the company also received FDA clearance for a resin that targets other types of healthcare applications like orthodontic and dental. On a separate note, in August this year, Desktop Metal upgraded its Shop System for improved functionality and introduced a new printer platform based on patent-pending Digital Sheet Forming (DSF) technology.
