Tesla, the developer of “Tesla Semi” battery-electric Class 8 semi-trucks with autonomous capabilities, commenced deliveries of the same, with the first unit being delivered to PepsiCo.
The trucks were revealed at an event at its gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. Reportedly, five units have been displayed at the event. However, the company has not disclosed the price of the trucks.
PepsiCo ordered 100 Tesla Semi trucks back in 2017 and has previously announced plans to deploy at least 15 of the trucks at its Modesto, California Frito-Lay site.
Analyst QuickTake: The long-waited Tesla Semi deliveries come after three years of it being delayed since 2019 amidst supply chain shortages and battery availability issues. Tesla began limited production of the truck in December 2021 and opened it for public reservations this May. Tesla has secured several notable pre-orders for the truck from companies, including AB InBev (2017), Karat Packaging (10 trucks; December 2021), MHX Leasing (10 trucks; April 2021), Pride Group Enterprises (150 trucks; November 2020), and Walmart Canada (130 trucks; September 2020), in addition to PepsiCo.
