Waymo lays off staff amid Alphabet-wide job cuts; scaling back autonomous trucking project

Management news

  • According to an announcement last week , Waymo—the self-driving tech development unit of Google’s parent company, Alphabet—has reportedly laid off staff following Alphabet’s job cuts, impacting 12,000 employees (~6% of its workforce).

  • The number of staff affected has not been disclosed but Waymo notes that “a limited number of roles” have been dismissed. According to sources, employees across many departments have been laid off, including engineers working on perception and motion control, fleet and vehicle technicians, and recruiters.

  • It is further predicted that Waymo plans to abandon its autonomous trucking business, Waymo Via. The company has denied this, but a spokesperson has noted that the company would slightly scale back on its fully-autonomous trucking operations. The company will continue to develop its autonomous software, Waymo Driver, which powers both its autonomous ride-hailing and trucking segments.

  • Waymo currently operates commercial robotaxi services in California and Arizona. Its autonomous trucking project is reportedly yet to generate revenue (neither confirmed nor denied by the company) but has partnerships with companies such as C.H. Robinson, J.B. Hunt, and Uber Freight for various pilots.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Layoffs and shutdowns have been a common scene in the autonomous vehicle space since last year. Companies affected by layoffs include: autonomous vehicle technology company, Motional ; autonomous trucking company, TuSimple ; autonomous vehicle startup, Pony.ai ; and autonomous last-mile delivery vehicle developer, Nuro. In addition, Ford and VW-backed autonomous tech development unit, Argo AI , was closed in October along with Aurora Innovation, another autonomous vehicle startup that is reportedly considering strategic actions , including the sale of the company, amid worsening market conditions.
