Citymapper, a UK-based leading transport planning app, announced the discontinuation of its self-service developer offerings, including software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs), effective June 23, 2023.
The company stated that for current self-serve customers, their API key will cease to be functional, whereas those that have previously entered into Enterprise contracts with Citymapper will remain unaffected by this change.
The company plans to redirect its focus toward improving the Citymapper app.
Analyst QuickTake: Citymapper's move to end SDKs and APIs for self-serve customers appears to be a strategic maneuver to regain a foothold in the competitive B2C space. This move aligns with the company's recent actions, including reducing the paywall for premium features, indicating a concerted effort to attract and retain individual users. While the initial acquisition by Via suggested a focus on the B2B sector and transitioning toward enterprise solutions, the subsequent integration of Citymapper's user-optimized experience into Via's TransitTech platform indicates a potential shift back to addressing consumer needs. It appears that Citymapper has renewed emphasis on enhancing its direct-to-consumer offerings and reaffirming its presence in the B2C market.
