Citymapper discontinues offering SDKs and APIs for self-serve customers

Product updates

  • Citymapper, a UK-based leading transport planning app, announced the discontinuation of its self-service developer offerings, including software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs), effective June 23, 2023.

  • The company stated that for current self-serve customers, their API key will cease to be functional, whereas those that have previously entered into Enterprise contracts with Citymapper will remain unaffected by this change.

  • The company plans to redirect its focus toward improving the Citymapper app.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Citymapper's move to end SDKs and APIs for self-serve customers appears to be a strategic maneuver to regain a foothold in the competitive B2C space. This move aligns with the company's recent actions, including reducing the paywall for premium features, indicating a concerted effort to attract and retain individual users. While the initial acquisition by Via suggested a focus on the B2B sector and transitioning toward enterprise solutions, the subsequent integration of Citymapper's user-optimized experience into Via's TransitTech platform indicates a potential shift back to addressing consumer needs. It appears that Citymapper has renewed emphasis on enhancing its direct-to-consumer offerings and reaffirming its presence in the B2C market.
