GM’s Cruise spotted testing self-driving vehicles in San Diego, California

Geographic expansion

  • General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, has been spotted testing its self-driving vehicles in San Diego, California, indicating possible expansion to the city.

  • The company has not specified any plans to expand operations to San Diego yet but started initial testing in the city using manually driven vehicles in order to familiarize the driving environment.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Cruise has been strategically augmenting its geographical presence at a notable pace in recent weeks. Such expansions include launching the tests in areas such as Miami (Florida), Nashville (Tennessee), Los Angeles (California), Atlanta (Georgia) , and Charlotte (North Carolina) , bringing its operations to 11 cities in total. However, Cruise currently has commercial operations in only three cities—San Fransisco, Austin, and Phoenix.
