Wing, the drone delivery division operated by Alphabet, has extended its partnership with DoorDash, an American food delivery service, to launch drone-based food deliveries in the US.
The service will initially be launched in Christiansburg, Virginia (home to roughly 23,000 residents), in collaboration with its first restaurant partner, Wendy's. Eligible DoorDash customers can order specific menu items from Wendy's and opt for drone delivery during checkout, upon which the food will be delivered to the customer within “30 minutes.”
The companies plan to expand the service to other cities in the US later in the year.
Analyst QuickTake: DoorDash and Wing first partnered in November 2022 to offer drone-based food deliveries to the latter’s customers in Queensland, Australia—the country where Wing’s primary operations are based. In April 2023, the duo expanded the service to include Ipswich, Australia. Today's expansion marks a significant leap toward expanding DoorDash’s drone-based delivery service in the US.
