Walmart self-checkout glitch overcharges customers

Product updates

  • A software malfunction in the system transmitting price data to self-checkout kiosks has reportedly resulted in overcharging at 1,600 Walmart stores across the US.

  • The glitch occurred in mid-March and lasted several days. It resulted in under- and overcharging of several item types, including groceries, clothing, and appliances. Walmart plans to refund those who were overcharged due to the issue.

  • Analyst Quick Take: In October 2023 , Walmart announced plans to increase investments in self-checkouts as part of an initiative to remodel and upgrade its stores nationwide. However, since then, the company has closed self-checkouts in several stores, including in Missouri , Cleveland , Los Angeles , and New Mexico .
