The Better Meat Co. achieves over 30% price reduction for Rhiza mycoprotein

Industry news

  • The Better Meat Co., a plant-based ingredients company, announced a reduction of over 30% at scale in production costs for Rhiza mycoprotein, enabling the company to target price parity with commodity beef prices. The reduction was achieved using 9,000-liter fermentation systems, enabling economies of scale.

  • Rhiza mycoprotein is an all-natural, allergen-free, whole-food ingredient. According to the company, it contains more protein than eggs, more iron and zinc than beef, more fiber than oats, and more potassium than bananas. Moreover, it is free from cholesterol and saturated and trans fats.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In January 2023 , the company signed a joint development agreement with Greenleaf Foods to explore innovations in alternative proteins by leveraging its Rhiza mycoprotein ingredient. Further, in July 2023 , it received a USD 1 million grant to jointly develop alternative seafood with Oshi utilizing its fermentation technology.
