SpaceX launches Falcon 9 rocket and Türksat 6A satellite

Partnerships

  • SpaceX, a space travel and launch company, launched its Falcon 9 rocket with the Türksat 6A satellite aboard toward geostationary orbit on July 8, 2024 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

  • SpaceX has previously launched other Turkish satellites like the Türksat 5B satellite in December 2021; however, this marks a milestone for Turkey due to the Türksat 6A being its first-ever home-grown communications satellite. The launch follows multiple delays due to poor weather.

  • The launch marks Falcon 9's 15th launch with its two recent launches in June 2024 for the Astra 1P and 20 Starlink satellites . The Türksat 6A satellite, with a 15-year lifespan,  reached its temporary orbit ~70 minutes after takeoff and its operational orbital position will be at the 42 East longitude position in a geocentric orbit about 35,786 km above the Earth's surface.

  • Turkish Aerospace manufactured the Türksat 6A, and, once in orbit, it will be handled by Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu (TÜBITAK), the Scientific and Technological Research Institution of Turkey.
