Dollar General and Five Below limit self-checkout options

Product updates

  • D iscount retailer Dollar General has completed the removal of self-checkouts from nearly 12,000 of its stores. The company announced plans to move away from self-checkouts in December 2023 , a strategic decision driven by a desire to enhance sales and reduce retail shrink.

  • Meanwhile, Five Below, another discount retailer, has announced plans to remove self-checkout options from some locations to reduce retail shrink.

  • Analyst Quick Take: Dollar General and Five Below are the latest retailers to scale down their self-checkout offerings to reduce retail shrink and increase sales. Earlier this year, Target announced plans to restrict self-checkouts to customers purchasing 10 items or fewer and removed the technology from a store in California . Meanwhile, Walmart and Safeway recently removed self-checkout options from their stores to increase customer satisfaction and reduce shrinkage.
