Lithos Carbon, an agri-based carbon removal startup, and Microsoft have signed a new, three-year agreement to remove CO2 using enhanced rock weathering (ERW).
Under the partnership, Lithos will provide Microsoft with more than 11,400 tons of permanent carbon removal using ERW. Lithos Carbon will use basalt on croplands to capture CO2 as bicarbonate through a process that mimics natural rock weathering.
Analyst QuickTake: This collaboration is Microsoft’s third carbon removal deal involving ERW, announced this week, alongside partnerships with UNDO and Eion to remove 15,000 tons and 8,000 tons of CO2, respectively. As of December 2023, Lithos delivered 500 tons of carbon removal for Microsoft by deploying ultra-fine, organic-grade volcanic basalt rock dust on US farmland.
