Forsea Foods achieves record cell density in cultivated eel production

Industry news

  • Israeli startup Forsea Foods reached a cell density of over 300 million cells/ml using minimal growth media in cultivated eel production, claiming it as the highest recorded density in the cultured seafood industry.

  • The company uses organoid technology to create three-dimensional tissue structures without scaffolding. This simplifies production, improves scalability, and reduces the need for expensive growth factors.

  • This breakthrough is expected to bring production costs below traditional market prices, and the company is planning to launch its cultivated eel products commercially by 2026.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In January 2024 , Forsea Foods unveiled its cell-cultivated freshwater eel prototype and achieved working proof-of-concept, claiming it mimics the sensory qualities of a real eel. In June 2024 , the company held a tasting event in Tel Aviv to showcase this product.
