Israeli startup Forsea Foods reached a cell density of over 300 million cells/ml using minimal growth media in cultivated eel production, claiming it as the highest recorded density in the cultured seafood industry.
The company uses organoid technology to create three-dimensional tissue structures without scaffolding. This simplifies production, improves scalability, and reduces the need for expensive growth factors.
This breakthrough is expected to bring production costs below traditional market prices, and the company is planning to launch its cultivated eel products commercially by 2026.
Analyst QuickTake: In January 2024 , Forsea Foods unveiled its cell-cultivated freshwater eel prototype and achieved working proof-of-concept, claiming it mimics the sensory qualities of a real eel. In June 2024 , the company held a tasting event in Tel Aviv to showcase this product.
