IonQ partners with Hyundai for quantum research on battery development

Partnerships

 • Maryland-based quantum computing company IonQ has partnered with Hyundai Motor Company, to jointly research lithium car batteries for electric vehicles using quantum computing. The terms and financial details of the partnership have not been disclosed.

 • The duo will leverage IonQ’s quantum expertise and Hyundai’s lithium battery expertise to develop new quantum variational eigensolver (QVE) algorithms to simulate lithium battery compounds and control their chemical reactions. The partnership is expected to result in enhanced batteries with improved performance, durability, and safety, at a lower cost.

Analyst QuickTake: The industry has seen partnerships of a similar fashion—quantum-assisted development of energy-efficient batteries—in the past. That includes Tokyo-based QunaSys and Toyota Motor in October 2021 and US-based Quantinuum (formerly Cambridge Quantum Computing, prior to the merger with Honeywell in November 2021) and the German Aerospace Center in May 2021 . Partnerships of this kind are believed to contribute toward global sustainability efforts and also amplify the potential to discover new material sources in the future.
