Italy joins the list of countries to ban Clearview AI; imposes EUR 20 million penalty

Regulation/policy

 • Clearview AI, a developer of facial recognition-based solutions for law enforcement, has been notified by Italy's Data Protection Authority, the Garante, to stop processing Italian citizens’ personal data and delete existing data.

 • The company also imposed a penalty of EUR 20 million (USD 22 million) for breaching the EU personal data and privacy law.

 • Garante claims that Clearview AI has breached General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by illegally holding and processing biometric and geolocation data of Italian citizens without adequately informing them on the use of this data.

Analyst QuickTake: With this, Italy joins the list of countries, including Canada , Australia , the UK , and France , to prohibit Clearview AI’s operations. While this could impact the company’s international growth, the company appears to be expanding in its home country, the US, marked by a recent contract received from the US Air Force to research facial recognition smart glasses on top of a patent received by USPTO for its technology.
