Founder Phil Libin (former Evernote CEO) announced that mmhmm launched as an invite-only beta for Apple’s macOS operating system in July 2020. The app allows users to share presentations, web browsers, and videos while the speaker remains on-screen for a more interactive video conferencing experience. The company identifies three customer segments: video conferencing, content creators on platforms such as YouTube, and users who want to utilize mmhmm to stream PowerPoint slides.

mmhmm announced its first acquisition, Memix, in October 2020. Memix offers various filters and special effects (e.g., lighting, background details, retouching appearance, etc.), which can be applied to live and pre-recorded videos. The Memix filters are deployed using a virtual camera and available for Zoom, WebEx, and Microsoft Teams.

Memix was founded by Inigo Quilez, former product manager and lead engineer at Facebook, and Pol Jeremias-Vila, lead graphics software engineer at Pixar Studios. The co-founders will assist with the transition and integration of the tech, however they will not join mmhmm as full-time employees. Integrating Memix’s technology with mmhmm’s platform is on the company’s roadmap ahead of its consumer launch on Windows.

In November 2020, mmhmm launched for free on macOS after garnering 100,000 signups to its invite-only beta. The company also introduced its “Premium Tools” product that offers paying customers with a fully customizable interface with presenter controls and other add-ons. Users can access Premium Tools in a seven-day trial, while full access will cost USD 9.99 per month.

In April 2021, the company announced that it would be launching usage-based enterprise accounts and a Windows version of the application in open beta.  Enterprise account users will be able to control employee accounts, invite through a link, and maintain an email domain for a subscription fee of USD 10 per month.

Mmhmm raised USD 100 million in a Series B round led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 in July 2021. The round also included the participation of Sequoia Capital, Mubadala Capital, and World Innovation Lab. The round comes a year after launching in private beta and follows its USD 21 million Series A round in October 2020. The fresh funds will be allocated toward product development, including the launch of its mobile apps, and infrastructure development.  The company also plans to boost hiring and expects to have over 100 employees by the end of 2021.
