The Hyundai Motor Company (KRX:005380) is a South Korean multinational automobile manufacturer founded in 1967. The company, its 33.9% ownership of Kia Motors, and Genesis comprise the automobile arm of the Hyundai Motor Group. According to Hyundai, it operates the world’s largest automobile manufacturing plant, Ulsan Plant, with an annual capacity of 1.6 million units. It also maintains a presence in over 180 countries. In 2023, the company sold 4.2 million units worldwide, generating KRW 162.7 trillion (~USD 130 billion) in total revenue.
Hyundai operates through three segments: Vehicles, Finance, and Other. The Vehicles segment focuses on the manufacturing and distribution of motor vehicles. Genesis, a subsidiary of Hyundai, caters to the luxury car market. The Finance segment provides vehicle financing services, along with credit card processing services through its subsidiary Hyundai Card. Meanwhile, the Other segment includes R&D, train manufacturing (Hyundai Rotem), and other activities that are not classified under the other two segments.
Hyundai’s largest market is North America in FY2023, generating 40.8% of total revenue. However, Hyundai remains the market leader for automobiles in South Korea with a 43.2% market share. Ramping up sales, including that of its luxury brand Genesis, remains a top priority of the company in 2024, with a global sales target of 4.22 million units. It is also working on deploying optimized strategies tailored for each region while accelerating its transition toward electrification. By 2030, the company aims to increase annual global BEV sales to 1.87 million units and secure a 7% global market share.
