Rubrik

Rubrik is a data security and management company providing zero trust security software and associated services to help enterprises store, secure, and manage their data across networks, cloud, and SaaS from a single centralized platform. The company originally dealt in data backup solutions, but has since transitioned into a fully fledged data security company, leveraging advanced technologies including AI and machine learning (ML) to defend enterprise data against cyberattacks, insider threats, and prevent disruptions. 

The company’s flagship security offering, Rubrik Security Cloud, was launched in August 2022, offering data observability, resilience, and remediation functionality. The platform continuously monitors data records and usage patterns to help manage data access and exposure risk, monitor and manage sensitive data, and detect threats and anomalies, also providing risk quantification, analytics tools, and actionable insights via a single pane of glass dashboard. Air-gapped data backup solutions are also offered, catering to enterprise, cloud, and SaaS applications, along with remediation solutions including threat containment and data recovery as well as recovery testing and validation features. 

The Rubrik platform integrates with databases, cloud providers, SaaS, containers, and other solutions, including AWS, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Azure, and SAP, to protect data across a business’ infrastructure whether in storage or in use, with air gaps, encryption, and secure protocols. Data discovery and management workflows are automated across all storage and applications based on data policies.

In August 2023, Rubrik announced it had agreed to acquire Tel Aviv-based data security posture management (DSPM) firm Laminar to enhance its cloud data security offering and establish a new R&D center in Israel. 

The company also operates R&D centers in Bangalore, India, and California, US.

Key customers and partnerships

In August 2023, Rubrik reported a customer base of 4,500+, including PepsiCo, Home Depot, St. Lukes, nVidia, Honda, Adobe, GSK, American Family Insurance, and Payette.

In August 2021, Rubrik announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft to further integrate Rubrik’s platform with Microsoft Azure and build ransomware defense solutions.

Funding and financials

Rubrik’s latest VC funding was a USD 261 million Series E round led by Bain Capital Ventures. The proceeds of the round were expected to be invested in building data security products and acquiring relevant technology. Rubrik was valued at USD 3.3 billion during the round.

Rubrik subsequently secured a strategic investment from Microsoft in January 2021 at a valuation of USD 4 billion. The funding was reportedly channeled into Rubrik’s go-to-market efforts and the development of Azure-based products.

In January 2023, Rubrik reported software subscription annual recurring revenue (ARR) of USD 500 million and a net dollar retention rate of over 140%.
