BigCommerce offers a no-code platform to create ecommerce websites. It allows users to build and edit web pages via a drag-and-drop interface, use custom design themes, and handle functions such as shipping, marketing, and payments.

Moreover, the platform provides a range of supplementary tools such as “Open Checkout,” an open-source addition to its native checkout process, “Big Open Data Solution ,” a customer analytics product that lets merchants aggregate, analyze, and use online store data to gain insights into customer behaviors, and a range of tools for SEO and merchandising. In September 2023, BigCommerce launched its B2B Edition Invoice Portal to improve the invoice payment process for large suppliers.

The company expanded its operations in Europe and Latin America in 2021 and early-2022, by expanding its operations to Germany, Mexico, Spain , the Netherlands, France, and Italy, bringing its coverage to 150 countries as of January 2022 (from 120 in June 2020).

Furthermore, the company has made several acquisitions to expand its capabilities. BigCommerce acquired the data feed management platform Feedonomics for USD 145 million in July 2021 to enable enterprise customers to use 100+ advertising channels (including social media, search engines, and ad networks) and boost sales. In April 2022, BigCommerce acquired BundleB2B to enable merchants to access BundleB2B’s set of tools, which include account management tools, shared shopping lists, buy again functionality, and quote management.

In October 2023, BigCommerce acquired Makeswift , a visual editor for Next.js websites, which offers a no-code solution for visually editing React components. The company leveraged this acquisition to launch a new storefront building product named “Catalyst” in February 2024. Catalyst is designed to enable BigCommerce customers, ecommerce developers, and agency partners to build online stores using composable Next.js architecture.

Key customers and partnerships

As of January 2024, BigCommerce served a customer base of almost 6,000 enterprises, including large ones such as Ben & Jerry’s, Molton Brown, Burrow, SC Johnson, SkullCandy, SoloStove, and Vodafone.

The company actively partners with companies to offer business solutions to its merchants in the form of integrations. It has strategic partnerships with Systum (insight provider for merchant data), Bunde B2B (which allows users to review transactions and maintain accounts), and payment partners including Elavon, WeChat Pay, and Adyen.  In March 2022, the company partnered with Bolt, a checkout solutions and shopper network provider, to enable BigCommerce merchants to add Bolt “One-Click Checkout” for their stores. It went on to partner with cryptocurrency payments processors BitPay and CoinPayments in August 2022 to deliver cryptocurrency payment solutions to BigCommerce merchants in select countries.

Moreover, in January 2023, the company launched “Buy with Prime” in partnership with Amazon. This solution enables merchants to streamline their checkout experience, offer free shipping, activate Amazon display ads, and add a “Buy with Prime” button on any product in their storefront.

In January 2024, the company partnered with Marketplacer to enable customers to transform their online stores into marketplaces for diversified products. The platform also assists users in cross-selling through multiple platforms including Amazon, eBay, Facebook, and Instagram.

Funding and financials

The company generated USD 309 million in revenue in 2023. However, as of January 2024, the company was yet to turn profitable (with a non-GAAP operating loss of USD USD 5.7 million in 2023). The company expected revenue to reach USD 327.1 million–335.1 million in 2024 (implying YoY growth of 6%–8%).
