UK-based Riverlane is a quantum software company spun out of the University of Cambridge. The company’s flagship product, Deltaflow.OS, is a quantum operating system that can run on different types of quantum computing hardware. The company also offers Deltaflow-VL, a quantum control system, and Anian, a software solution for developing chemical applications.
Riverlane is a part of the government's USD 9.3 million Industrial Challenge Strategy Fund to deploy an innovative quantum operating system. This funding requires Riverlane to work together with other quantum startups in the UK and deliver its operating system to every quantum computer in the country.
Key customers and partnerships
In August 2021, the company secured its first sales contract of the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC)—which is funded by the UK Research and Innovation body—to supply quantum software products. In June 2022, the company partnered with Rigetti Computing (US) to conduct joint research on error correction solutions in superconducting quantum computers. In December 2023, the company partnered with Nüvü Camēras and Infleqtion to develop qubit imaging systems for quantum computers. Later that month RIverlane and Rolls-Royce initiated a project called Quantum Accelerator for Materials Design (QuaMaD), to develop tools that simulate complex materials on quantum computers. In February 2024, the company joined a project led by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a part of the US Department of Energy (DOE) along with Rigetti Computing to explore the possibility of integrating a quantum computer and high-performance computing (HPC) systems. In March 2024, Riverlane and Xanadu, and Rolls-Royce joined together to leverage quantum computing for modeling airflow in jet engines. The project CATALYST is supported by Innovate UK—GBP 0.4 million (USD 0.5 million)—and the National Research Council of Canada—CAD 0.5 million (USD 0.4 million).
Funding and financials
In April 2023, the company raised GBP 15 million (USD 18.7 million) in a Series B funding round led by Molten Ventures, which brought Riverlane’s total funding to USD 43 million. The funds from the round were earmarked to fuel the development of Riverlane’s operating software Deltaflow.OS.
