Origin Materials, a carbon-negative materials manufacturer, and Indorama Ventures, the world’s largest producer of virgin and recycled PET resins, have formed a strategic partnership to commercialize the production of bio-based materials.
The companies will explore initiatives related to the mass production of bio-based materials, including evaluating the use of existing Indorama Ventures' units in the US to produce the materials. Indorama Ventures is also looking to use Origin Materials' platform chemical, CMF (chloromethylfurfural), to develop sustainable chemicals and bio-based plastics.
The collaboration will also explore the possibility of utilizing samples of bio-based materials in product launches with prominent brands, focusing on limited-volume releases. These materials could potentially be applied in a range of industries such as packaging, textiles, films, and automotive.
Analyst QuickTake: Origin Materials has been actively involved in developing and commercializing carbon-negative materials. Last month, the company partnered with SCG Packaging (SCGP) to explore the licensing of Origin's technology for use in an ASEAN-based manufacturing facility. Origin has also collaborated with industry players such as Minafin (February 2022), Mitsubishi (April 2022), Intertex (July 2022), and ATC Plastics (July 2022) for the development of carbon-negative black for various applications such as bio-based chemicals, tire materials, rubber compounding, and plastic masterbatch.
