Amazon to replace 'Just Walk Out' checkout options with smart carts at Fresh stores

Product updates

  • Amazon has announced plans to revamp its Amazon Fresh grocery stores by replacing its Just Walk Out checkout-free technology with smart carts. The revamp was a response to customer feedback that revealed a customer preference to view their receipts while they shopped, a feature offered by Amazon's smart cart solutions.

  • Amazon will continue to offer the Just Walk Out technology at Amazon Go convenience stores and select Amazon Fresh stores in the UK. The company will also continue to offer the technology to third-party retailers.

  • Analyst Quick Take: In February 2023 , Amazon announced plans to slow the expansion of its Just Walk Out and Amazon One-powered brick-and-mortar stores with plans to close certain stores with low-growth potential. The decision was followed by the closures of Amazon Fresh and other Amazon Go-powered retail locations.
