Walmart (Nasdaq: WMT) is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores, and grocery stores. It also owns and operates the Sam’s Club retail warehouses. The company was founded by the Walton family in 1969 before it subsequently went public in 1972. As of January 2023, Walmart had 10,619 stores and clubs in 19 countries, serving approximately 255 million customers every week. Walmart generated revenue of USD 643 billion in FY2023 (year ending January 31).
Walmart conducts its business operations under three segments: Walmart U.S., Walmart International, and Sam’s Club. All three segments offer a wide range of products, including groceries, clothing, electronics, household goods, and more. Additionally, Walmart has expanded into ecommerce, operating an online marketplace that provides customers with the option of shopping for products through its website and mobile applications.
The US is Walmart’s largest market (~69% of total revenue in FY2023), followed by Mexico and Central America, Canada, China, and other Asian and European countries. Walmart expects revenue growth of 3%–4% in FY2025. The company also expects to invest up to USD 20 billion–24 billion in FY2025, with a focus on technology, supply chain, and customer-facing initiatives. Walmart has set a target to achieve zero emissions in its operations by 2040.
