Brevel is an Israel-based plant-based ingredients startup that develops cultivation technology for microalgae-based alternative proteins for various applications.
The company claims they have solved issues associated with microalgae as a protein source such as high production cost, low nutritional profile, and palatable taste by utilizing proprietary technology that combines fermentation and photosynthesis in indoor, fully automated reactors. Compared to existing solutions, this method is claimed to increase yield per land by 200x and reduce cost by 90%. According to Brevel, the resulting product is color and taste-neutral while being comparable to other leading alternatives such as soy and pea.
In June 2024, Brevel inaugurated its first commercial-scale facility to manufacture its new patented microalgae protein powder. The first products from this facility are slated for rollout in Q1 2025. This facility, featuring multiple bioreactors of varying capacities, including its first 5,000-liter bioreactor, is the first of two planned constructions, with the second facility slated for 2025, expected to have a total capacity of 900,000 liters.
Key customers and partnerships
In October 2022, the company partnered with Israeli plant-based cheese producer Vgarden, to supply ingredients for a new high-protein microalgae-based cheese.
Funding and financials
In July 2023, Brevel raised USD 18.5 million in a seed funding round led by NevaTeam Partners, with participation from the European Union's EIC Fund and others. The funding included USD 8.4 million raised in June 2022, converted from grants and convertible loans into equity. The funding was earmarked for the further development of its protein and expansion of operations.
