Remilk produces dairy alternatives using a microbial fermentation process. The Israel-based startup uses a specially designed microbe that modifies plant-based fats and sugars to replicate casein, the main protein in cow’s milk. Remilk intends to use this plant-based casein to develop dairy products such as milk and cheese.
In November 2021, the startup announced plans to set up production facilities in both the US and Europe, where it is collaborating with authorities to get its product cleared. In April 2022, the company announced it will build a production facility in a land spanning over 750,000 sq feet in Kalundborg, Denmark. The company claims it will be the world’s largest precision fermentation factory once it begins operations.
In June 2022 the company declared self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status in line with FDA requirements enabling the sale of its products within the US. In February 2023 , the FDA provided the company with a “no questions letter”, further establishing the brand’s product as safe for consumption. During the same month, Remilk also received approval from the Singapore Food Authority (SFA) enabling the sale of Remilk’s products in Singapore. Further, in February 2024 , Remilk received a “letter of no objection” from Health Canada to use and market its animal-free milk protein, BLG, in Canada, making it the first company to be greenlit for a precision fermentation-derived protein in Canada.
Key customers and partnerships
In July 2022, Remilk partnered with Israeli food giant CBC to develop a line of animal-free dairy products which were slated to launch within 12 months, pending regulatory approval. In January 2023 , the company partnered with US food giant General Mills to supply its fermented dairy proteins for the production of Bold Cultur cheese. This partnership marked the company’s US debuts and its first commercial partnership.

Remilk was one of 10 startups to join the ProVeg Incubator, the world’s first plant-based incubator, from which it received a grant of EUR 20,000 (~USD 24,374).
