General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, has begun testing its autonomous vehicles in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Initial testing in the city will be done using manually driven vehicles in order to familiarize the driving environment. The company has not yet disclosed the timeline for fully autonomous vehicle testing in the city.
Analyst QuickTake: Cruise has been strategically augmenting its geographical presence at a notable pace in recent weeks. Such expansions include launching the tests in areas such as Miami (Florida), Nashville (Tennessee), Los Angeles (California), Atlanta (Georgia) , Charlotte (North Carolina), and San Diego (California), bringing its operations to 12 cities in total. However, Cruise currently has commercial operations in only three cities—San Fransisco, Austin, and Phoenix.
