Amazon has opened its 34th Just Walk Out technology-powered store in the collegiate space at the University of Virginia in partnership with Grubhub and Aramark Collegiate Hospitality.
The new store, Gaston's Market, utilizes Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology. Students can pick up their purchases and exit the store to complete the transaction, enabling a cashier-less checkout experience.
Meanwhile, Amazon also opened a new Amazon Fresh store in Roseville, California. The store features Dash Carts and Amazon One, a palm-based payment system. It offers a wide selection of groceries, including national brands, produce, and Amazon's private label brands.
Analyst QuickTake: This April , Amazon announced plans to replace the Just Walk Out technology with Dash Carts at its US-based Amazon Fresh grocery store locations. However, Amazon continues to roll out Walk Out technology at third-party locations with an increased focus on locations that benefit more from quick checkout formats. Amazon’s recent Just Walk Out-powered store openings include an Amazon Go store in Bellevue , Washington (July 2024), a store at the O2 arena , a multi-purpose indoor arena in London (June 2024), a checkout-free store at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (June 2024), and SSE Arena , in Belfast (April 2024).
