Amazon opens new cashierless store in Virginia and California

Partnerships

  • Amazon has opened its 34th Just Walk Out technology-powered store in the collegiate space at the University of Virginia in partnership with Grubhub and Aramark Collegiate Hospitality.

  • The new store, Gaston's Market, utilizes Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology. Students can pick up their purchases and exit the store to complete the transaction, enabling a cashier-less checkout experience.

  • Meanwhile, Amazon also opened a new Amazon Fresh store in Roseville, California. The store features Dash Carts and Amazon One, a palm-based payment system. It offers a wide selection of groceries, including national brands, produce, and Amazon's private label brands.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This April , Amazon announced plans to replace the Just Walk Out technology with Dash Carts at its US-based Amazon Fresh grocery store locations. However, Amazon continues to roll out Walk Out technology at third-party locations with an increased focus on locations that benefit more from quick checkout formats. Amazon’s recent Just Walk Out-powered store openings include an Amazon Go store in Bellevue , Washington (July 2024), a store at the O2 arena , a multi-purpose indoor arena in London (June 2024), a checkout-free store at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (June 2024), and  SSE Arena , in Belfast (April 2024).
