Oatly, a plant-based dairy company uses oats to produce dairy alternatives such as milk, cream, ready-made beverages, and ice cream. The company uses its patented production method, which is based on enzyme technology that converts loose oats fibers into liquid, to manufacture its products. Their production method also retains most of the nutrients in oats, such as the oat beta-glucans.
In June 2023, Oatly made its foray into the plant-based cheese segment with the launch of its plant-based cream cheese. Made using Oatly’s proprietary oat base, it claims to be free from dairy, gluten, and GMOs and offers a similar taste, texture, and performance as traditional cream cheese. During the same month, Oatly launched a vanilla-flavored vegan soft-serve ice cream in the UK. The product was available at various outlets including The Breakfast Club, Fortnum & Mason, JENKI (as a matcha-flavored ice cream), and Lewis Hamilton-backed Neat Burger (in soft-serve shakes). In January 2024, Oatly launched Unsweetened and Oatly Super Basic in the US, marking the first addition to its US lineup in the past five years. Following this, in February 2024, the company added Oatmilk Creamers to its US lineup. Further, in March 2024, the company expanded its range with Oatgurt, a lineup of oat-based yogurt alternatives.
Oatly currently operates three production facilities in the US, located in Millville, New Jersey; Ogden, Utah; and Fort Worth, Texas. The Fort Worth facility, which opened in 2023, is the latest addition and has the largest footprint among the three, with an annual capacity of 150 million liters of oat milk.
