Volta Commercial Vehicles, a subsidiary of the New York-based hedge fund Luxor Capital Group, entered the electric truck space following the acquisition of Volta Trucks, previously bankrupt Sweden-based electric truck developer, in December 2023. Volta Commercial Vehicles took over the intellectual property of Volta and continued its operations.
Volta Trucks develops a fully battery-electric (BEV) truck, dubbed “Volta Zero.” Its flagship product is a 16-tonne truck that has a range of 125 mi and can travel at a maximum speed of 56 mph. It also offers an 18-tonne variant of the truck. Volta Zero is designed with an innovative drivetrain, with the driver’s seat positioned centrally and at a lower height than in conventional trucks. This factor, coupled with the glasshouse-style cab design, allows 220-degree visibility, minimizing blind spots. The company launched Volta Zero prototype in September 2020 and commenced series production of the 16-tonne Volta Zero in April 2023 and the 18-tonne varient in mid-2023. The company pitched the truck toward European and US customers, and was available for purchase or lease (July 2024).

In June 2024, Volta Trucks partnered with Upstream Security to utilize Upstream’s mobility detection and response platform to enhance the safety of Volta’s electric truck fleet.
