Founded in 2020, Mill, a California-based company, aims to convert food waste into chicken feed on a subscription basis. Customers receive food-shrinking, deodorizing Mill kitchen bins, mail-back pathways to farms, and personalized impact tracking for a monthly subscription fee of USD 33, as of January 2023. <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/27731">In March 2024</a>, the company announced the launch of a new version of their kitchen bin, which customers can buy outright for USD 999 or opt for a USD 29 monthly subscription.The initial version of Mill kitchen bin transforms leftover food scraps into food grounds by drying, shrinking, and deodorizing them overnight.  Based in Massachusetts, Kula Bio offers “Kula-N,” a patent-protected crop-agnostic biofertilizer that uses the “Xanthobacter autotrophicus” bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. Kula Bio grows the microbes to a high density using a proprietary process and then fed a carbon-rich energy source to “energize” the bacteria. The microbes are stated to have the ability to store energy, allowing them to function for weeks. The company claims that Kula-N reduces synthetic fertilizer usage by 50% and “communicates” with the plant to supply nitrogen on demand. In addition, it provides the soil with soil organic carbon (SOC) once the microbes die and reduces runoff.  
 
 
 As of June 2022, Kula Bio had not commercialized its product yet. The company planned to launch by the end of 2022 or early 2023 at a cost-competitive price compared with traditional fertilizer. According to the International Energy Agency, a concerted effort to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement would mean a quadrupling of mineral requirements for clean energy technologies by 2040. An even faster transition, to hit net-zero globally by 2050, would require six times more mineral inputs in 2040. Despite major downstream processing investments, mining sites opening, technology advancements and recycling, the market is unlikely to be able to absorb the demand surge.  We have entered into a commodities super-cycle that could last a decade and current options face technological, environmental and societal challenges.
