A clinical decision support system (CDSS) is a software program that helps healthcare providers make timely and accurate decisions at the point of care by converting data from electronic health records (EHRs) into actionable insights.
These programs may be standalone tools or integrated into larger healthcare information systems such as EHRs or hospital management software. Some set out to address a single issue or function, such as generating alerts and reminders, while others cover a wider range of capabilities or take on more complex tasks, like providing diagnostic support using machine learning algorithms.
A CDSS has three key elements:
- A data management layer: contains a clinical database (disease information, diagnoses, and lab results), patient data, and a knowledge base (If-Then medical rules or machine learning algorithms)
- An inference engine: analyzes available patient data using rules or algorithms found in the knowledge base
- A user interface: provides a portal that displays results
