Smell Tech

Unlocking the potential of olfaction through technology

Overview

Smell Tech, also known as olfactory technology or digital scent technology, is an emerging field that aims to measure, replicate, enhance, and manipulate the human sense of smell using electronic devices. While smells or scents have been a tool used by retailers, manufacturers, and marketers for decades to encourage certain customer behaviors (to their advantage), until recently, businesses lacked dedicated tools that enabled them to measure, analyze, and detect scents, despite the benefits they provided. Unlike light or sound, odors present much more complex problems of detection due to how they interact with humans and therefore require more robust tools, which has led to the creation of two branches of digital olfaction technology: one focused on detection, measurement, and identification and the other on the transfer and creation of scents.

With the use cases of Smell Tech spanning multiple industries such as health, food and agriculture, defense and security, retail, hospitality, and entertainment, the applications of Smell Tech are clearer than ever. From predictive insights and disease detection to immersive experience creation, customer engagement, and much more, it is becoming a rapidly evolving field. As technology advances, it is likely that we will see more widespread use of Smell Tech in many more fields.

Industry scope

This industry focuses on companies offering the following:
  1. Developing scent diffusion systems.
  2. Developing platforms and tools for odor detection and measurement as well as to provide insights and analytics for commercial sectors such as chemical, food & beverage, environment, and production.
  3. Engaged in and developing platforms and tools for odor detection and measurements as well as to provide insights and analytics for health industry applications such as disease detection.
  4. Developing scents and infusions.
  5. Developing platforms, experiences, and wearable tech aimed at providing the customer a more involved and immersive experience. This includes companies involved in scent marketing and scent branding and those that have developed systems which specifically target virtual and augmented reality (eg. Metaverse) applications.
However, we exclude the following areas when selecting companies for this industry:
  1. Companies developing air freshener products for residential use. These companies do not offer products that can be considered as belonging to Smell Tech due to the simplistic nature of the products.
  2. Companies engaged in perfume development for personal use. Perfumeries and perfume developers for personal use (such as Gucci, Givenchy, and Hugo Boss) are excluded, as this industry focuses on a wider range of application than a single person.
  3. Companies that provide odor measurement and analysis services but don't develop/offer tools or platforms for B2B/B2C customers (SGS, Intergeo) are excluded, as these services are performed in laboratories with specialized methods and equipment to which the mass market does not have access.
