Digital Humans

Imbuing emotion into human-digital interactions

Overview

A digital human is a lifelike virtual representation of a real or imaginary person that exhibits realistic human movements, behaviors, and interactions, aiming to establish an emotional connection with humans through verbal and nonverbal communication.

Digital humans encompass two types: Interactive and non-interactive. Interactive digital humans engage with users in real time, processing data and responding based on predefined algorithms and user interactions. These technologies often incorporate advanced natural language processing (NLP), AI, and machine learning (ML) algorithms to simulate human-like interactions.

Meanwhile, non-interactive digital humans lack user interaction capabilities and are often used in scripted roles, such as  movies or games or to disseminate scripted information to audiences.

Digital humans find applications across various domains, including customer service and virtual assistance applications, employee training and education, media, gaming, entertainment, fashion, and beyond.

Overview

Dani is an economist, always ready to have a financial discussion and share his expert financial advice with you. Ruth is a cookie coach, who can help you bake the ultimate chocolate chip cookie, customize the recipe, and answer your baking-related questions. Lil Miquela is an influencer with more than three million followers, who has collaborated with high-end fashion brands and was once counted among TIME magazine’s 25 Most Influential People.
Dani, Ruth, and Lil Miquela have one thing in common: they are digital humans. Dani is the digital version of UBS’s Chief Economist Daniel Kalt. On the other hand, Ruth and Lil Miquela are fictional characters created by tech startups Soul Machines and Brud, respectively.

What are digital humans?

A digital human is an avatar or digital form with human features. Digital humans can represent either real individuals or fictional characters and appear, move, behave, and interact in a realistic, human-like way.
Digital humans can be seen as the natural progression following chatbots and virtual (or voice) assistants (VAs). Unlike a transaction that can be handled by a chatbot or a VA, digital humans are designed to connect with humans at an emotional level and mimic human interaction, communicating using verbal and nonverbal cues.
Digital humans can be segmented in different ways. A widely used segmentation is the distinction between interactive and non-interactive digital humans. Interactive digital humans collect user data in real time, process it, and respond accordingly. They learn from algorithms defined by their creators and from their interactions with users. Their interactive design enhances user engagement and experience. Non-interactive digital humans are not intended for user interaction or responding to user input. Instead, they are scripted digital characters used in media such as films and video games or for delivering scripted information to customers and employees.
