Automated Store technologies such as computer vision, machine learning, in-store cameras, shelf weight sensors, barcode scanners, QR scanners, and RFID tags have been adopted across various consumer staples industries, predominantly in convenience stores, grocery stores, and concession stands. Automated stores, also known as smart stores, combine various automation technologies to enhance the customer experience and make in-store operations more efficient.
Retail automation has gone through several waves of early innovation, applied mainly to shelf inventory management and checkout. Interest in automated stores has increased in recent years as the technology advanced beyond basic point-of-sale (POS) processes. Most of the key disruptors in this report are focused on cashierless technology, which provides a relatively unstaffed experience for shoppers.

Automation at various stages of store operations

A truly automated customer/store experience requires various interconnected technologies. Unlike humans, who are naturally adept at image recognition and can carry out tasks based on decisions, machines and other forms of technology must process data through images and complex algorithms. Some of the integrated technologies/methods include:
  • Machine learning and vision tools: A subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that allows computers to understand images, these tools are used largely to track in-store shoppers. Shoppers still have to scan a code on their phones as they enter the store to identify themselves. Machine vision is also used for tracking product movement in the store. 
  • Sensors: Traditional and unstaffed retailers use lightweight sensors on store shelves along with cameras to detect whether a customer has picked up a product or put it back. The same sensors can also alert store staff when products are running out. 
  • Quick response (QR) codes: A mobile app generates a personalized QR code that’s used upon entering the store, paying for goods and exiting. They are also used as codes on products, which a shopper can scan for more information.
