To do that, these platforms use familiar functions such as drag-and-drop, filters, data queries, widgets, and application programming interfaces (APIs) to create software without the need to write a single line of code. NCDPs have so far disrupted business applications, mobile applications, and websites.

Market Mapping


The NCDP industry is dominated by the business application and spreadsheets and data segments, with more startups in the early and growth stages. The websites and ecommerce segment consists of the most growth-stage startups led by large public companies such as Bigcommerce, Shopify, Squarespace, and Wix. Comparatively, the gaming applications segment represents the smallest portion of the industry, with the least amount of disruptor presence.  

In addition to these disruptors, large incumbents such as AWS, Google, and Salesforce have entered the space via the business application, spreadsheets and data, and mobile application segments.

The no-code industry is led by large, publicly listed disruptors such as Shopify, Smartsheet Wix, and Squarespace, with Shopify being the largest in terms of market cap (as of March 2024). Notably, most of the public companies are concentrated in the website and ecommerce segment, with spreadsheet-centric application-building platform Smartsheet being the only exception. 

Among private companies, Airtable, which also offers a spreadsheet-centric app-building platform, is the largest in terms of funding (as of March 2024), having raised over USD 1 billion. Additionally, business app-building platform Coda, website-building platform Webflow, and cloud analytics platform Sigma Computing stand out as highly funded pure-play disruptors.

Tech giants play catch-up with emerging no-code concept

Incumbents in the no-code space primarily comprise Big Tech companies like Microsoft, AWS, and Google; CRM solution providers such as Salesforce; and large data analytics companies such as Databricks and Qlik. Like the disruptors, many of the incumbents are concentrated around the business application and spreadsheets and data segments. 

In addition to developing no-code solutions in-house, strategic acquisitions have also been used by incumbents either to enter the space (Time acquiring Brandcast in August 2022) or to extend their in-house solutions by offering no-code tools for non-developers (Databricks acquiring 8080 Labs in October 2021). Meanwhile, companies have also leveraged partnerships and integrations with other no-code players, such as IFTTT, Knak, and Shopify, to enhance their product capabilities.
